- Ponla a contraluz.

How to tell a well-made garment, starting with the fabric
Before you check the price, touch the fabric. Here’s what you’re touching and how to look after it.
If you're in a hurry
- Combed cotton has the short fibres removed: it’s softer and sheds less lint.
- Wool and cashmere are measured in microns. Fewer microns, softer feel.
- Fabric weight tells you how thick a fabric is.

Three numbers that help
Fabric weightg/m²What one square metre of fabric weighs. More grams, more body.
Wool microns≤ 19.5 µmFor merino to count as “extrafine”, Woolmark asks for 19.5 microns or less; “ultrafine” goes down to 17.5[1]. A micron is a thousandth of a millimetre.
Cashmere≤ 19 µmTo be sold as cashmere in the United States, the average fibre can’t be thicker than 19 microns[2].
The fabrics, one by one
| Fabric | Where it comes from | How it feels | How to care for it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Combed cotton | Cotton with the short fibres and impurities taken out before spinning[3] | Softer, more even and stronger; sheds less lint | Cold water, inside out |
| French terry | A knit with loops on the inside, left unbrushed | Breathable and absorbent; good between seasons | Dry flat or on a hanger |
| Fleece-back | A knit with the inner loops brushed | Warmer and fluffier | No hot dryer |
| Merino wool | The fleece of the merino sheep | Fine, stretchy and good with changing temperatures | Wool cycle or hand wash, cold |
| Cashmere | The fine undercoat of the cashmere goat[4] | Very soft and light for how warm it is | Hand wash, dry flat |
| Silk | The fibre the silkworm spins for its cocoon | Smooth, with a sheen and a loose drape | Hand wash or dry clean |
| Linen | The stem of the flax plant | Cool and crisp; it creases, and that’s part of the charm | Cold or warm water, hang to dry |
Three tests you can do in the shop
- Hold it up to the light. If a lot of light gets through, it’ll lose its shape and go see-through soon.
- Stretch the cuff or collar and let go. A good fabric snaps back in a couple of seconds.
- Find the label. In Mexico it has to say what it’s made of. If it doesn’t, be wary[5].
